Welcome to Oak Canyon Jr. High 7th Grade English Class: I am looking forward to a year where we will all learn and enjoy school. I know if we all work together, this year can be an "M & M" year - "Meaningful and Marvelous." Course Description and Objectives: The 7th grade English class is designed to help students improve skills in reading, writing, speaking, listening and research. The objectives are based on the Utah State Common Core Curriculum. This site can be found by clicking on the 7th grade Common Core Standards button found on the "Home" page at the top of this page. Materials and supplies:
pen and/or pencil to class each day
spiral bound notebook or paper in binder
1 folder with pockets
planner to record assignments (provided for each student on first day of school)
silent reading book for class
Classroom Rules: 1. Be in seat working on assignment or board work when bell rings. 2. Be prepared with materials and assignments. 3. Show respect to teachers and peers. 4. Follow directions and listen. 5. Check classroom whiteboard and website for listed assignments and due dates. Hall Passes:Each student will receive two hall passes at the beginning of each quarter. These passes may be used or turned in at the end of the quarter for extra credit. Extra Credit: Extra credit will be offered a few times throughout the year. If a student thinks another opportunity is needed, he/she may visit with me individually. lease be aware that extra credit does not take the place of the regular assignments.
Homework: Students are required to read 20 minutes a day, five days a week. Objective assignments such as quizzes and worksheets will be graded and recorded within two days following the assignment date. Subjective assignments (such as writings and book reports) will be graded and recorded within 1 to 2 weeks. All assignments will be returned to the student and kept in classroom folders until the end of the quarter or semester. Each student will be required to complete two book reports per quarter: one on an outside reading book and one in-class book project on the literature read as a class for the quarter. Students homework is due at the beginning of class on the due date. It should be complete. Points will be docked for late work. Students who are absent should turn assignments in within two weeks after their return for full credit and then assignments will receive late points docked from the assignments.All assignments must be turned in one week before the end of the quarter for any points or credit. Absences:Students who are ablsent should check on the website under their class for assignments missed and Skyward. E-time is available for students who need help on class assignments. Grades: The grading is on total points earned by the student. Grading Scale: A 93-100 B+ 83-86 C+ 77-79 D+ 67-69 F 0-59 A- 90-92 B 83-86 C 73-76 D 63-65 I = Inc. B- 80-82 C- 70-72 D- 60-62 Required Reading: Student will receive a reading grade as part of their overall grade each month. Students should read 200 pages per month (averages 50 pages per week). Reading scores will be as follows: 180-200 or more pages = 90-100% ( A) 160-179 = 80-89% (B) 140-159 = 70-79% (C) 120-139 = 60-69% (D) Less than 120 pages = 0-59% All students will receive a record sheet to track their reading throughout the month. The original tracking sheet recorded at the end of the month with the teacher. Student may read as many books as they want, but should complete at least one book in the designated genre assigned for the month. Reading schedules, due dates and record sheet will be available on line under book reports.
